Dermal Needling

Also known as Collagen Induction Therapy, dermal needling uses tiny ultra-thin needles to stimulate natural collagen production, reorder pigmentation and strengthen barrier function.

Dermal needling involves gently piercing the skin with superficial ultra-thin needles to stimulate natural collagen reproduction, allowing fine channels to be created in the skin.

These channels can carry up to 80% more topical nutrients, allowing for treatment delivery deep into the skin to feed the underlying cells found in the dermis and basal layer. This increased absorption of active ingredients into the skin stimulates repair and enhances the natural healing process that is initiated by the micro-trauma of the needles. Natural growth factors are produced by the skin, resulting in increased production of collagen and elastin, which continues for several months, such that the results improve as time goes by.

Benefits of Dermal Needling

  • Tightens, lifts and rejuvenates skin
  • Reduces acne scars, surgical scars and other scarring
  • Improves wrinkles and fine lines
  • Minimises pore size
  • Improves stretch marks
  • Virtually painless with little to no downtime

Dermal needling promotes scarless healing and natural collagen reproduction.

It is similar to fractional laser treatments, IPL, laser resurfacing, and chemical peels, but with fewer side effects and downtime.

At SkinBox we use a Bomtech™ needling pen device, which is much safer and more effective in piercing the skin than traditional skin micro needling rollers, because of its unique vertical micro needling technology.

The Bomtech™ pen device has 7 speed levels with oscillation ranging from 80/sec to 125/sec. With a 12 needle cartridge, up to 1,500 microchannels can be created per second. The needle length, and therefore the depth of treatment, can be adjusted between 0 – 2mm.

When the needle tip makes contact with the skin, the needles create tiny puncture in the skin’s surface, causing micro-trauma, and inducing an immune response, and subsequently, the creation of new healthy collagen. The punctures also act as micro-channels that carry topical nutrients used during the treatment deep into skin layers for an increased effect. Because the needles oscillate as quickly as they do, the tip of the one device easily *glides* across the skin, without catching or causing any dermal tearing, reducing pain and patient downtime.

The Bomtech™ takes all the advantages of older devices, leaving behind any shortcomings, and incorporates it all into an automated device that is able to produce over 1,500 micro holes in the skin per second, making the Bomtech™ more effective than dermal rollers, dermal stamps, and various other automated needling devices. Of note, both the needling handpiece and the cartridges are ARTG listed (ARTG 337010 & 362550).

With Bomtech™, we can effectively treat hard-to-reach places (e.g. around the eyes, nose, and lips). Because of the vertical delivery, the needles can easily penetrate scar tissue.

The mechanism of injury is a natural process, which makes dermal needling a holistic approach to skin therapy.

All Dermal Therapists at SkinBox have certified advanced training in Dermal Needling, as in order to achieve optimum results it is important to understand the science behind the process and to be able to modify treatment plans for a patient’s specific needs.

FAQ’s about Dermal Needling

How many treatments are recommended for rejuvenation, acne scarring and stretch marks?

As a general guide:

  • Rejuvenation: 3-4 treatments 4 weeks apart
  • Acne scarring: 4-6 treatments 6 weeks apart
  • Stretch marks: Up to 10 treatments 4-6 weeks apart
How should I prepare my skin before having a medical dermal needling treatment?

The best results are seen when the skin is prepared correctly prior to the treatment. We generally recommend a pre-treatment home care skin regime incorporating various vitamins and active cosmeceutical ingredients to allow the skin’s strength to build up for 1-3 weeks prior to your treatment, and for 6 weeks afterwards. This advice is tailored to your particular circumstances at our initial Dermal Therapy consultation.

How long should it take before I see results from Dermal needling?

Typically, you will see results after the first treatment. Lasting, and more significant results will occur after 4-6 treatments (spaced 4-6 weeks apart). Your skin will continue to improve over the next 6-12 months after a course of treatments and when combined with the recommended post-treatment care. Additional benefits can be seen when using our home-care dermal rolling system in conjunction with our clinic treatments.

Is Dermal Needling painful?

For minimum needle depths dermal needling treatments are painless. For treatments over 0.5mm in depth, a local anaesthetic cream is applied before the treatment and this ensures that the treatment is virtually pain-free.

Is there any downtime after Dermal Needling treatments?

Generally no, but you may experience facial redness for 12-48 hours after the treatment. Most people are able to return to normal daily activities immediately after the treatment, although you will not be able to apply make-up until the following day.

How soon after filler injections can I have dermal needling?

It is recommended to leave at least 2 weeks after filler injections before having a medical dermal needling treatment. Alternatively, have your needling treatment 1-2 days before having fillers injected.
