Treatment for vaginal atrophy and urinary incontinence symptoms
Oestrogen levels can fall naturally during menopause or suddenly following surgery and some medical treatments, significantly affecting the vaginal structure and function.
The inspiration for this significant advancement in vaginal health has come from dermatological treatments used for wrinkle reductions and skin texture improvements.
The loss of oestrogen production from the ovaries in the perimenopausal years and beyond is the most recognised cause of vaginal atrophy. Reduced oestrgeon leads to a reduction of collagen in the vaginal mucosa and thinning of the epithelium, which makes the vagina more susceptible to trauma during intercourse. With reduced oestrogen, we also have reduced blood flow to the area, leading to a decrease in vaginal secretions and loss of natural lubrication. This in turn decreases the lactobacilli bacteria of the vagina, which results in an increased pH level, allowing unwanted growth of pathogens such as yeasts and bacteria. This can result in an unpleasant vaginal odour.
What are the physical and emotional effects of vaginal atrophy?
The symptoms of vaginal atrophy may or may not occur simultaneously, and may be felt as:
- Vaginal dryness, itching and burning:
Thinning of the walls, loss of hydration and changes to the pH and internal environment can result in feelings of dryness or constant itching. - Pain during sexual intercourse
The thinning of the mucosa and skin creates fragile tissue and loss of lubrication and the subsequent dryness can contribute to pain during sexual intercourse. - Vaginal laxity, loss of elasticity or tone
Thinning of the walls and loss of volume in the tissue can lead to declines in the structural strength and feelings of vaginal laxity. - Recurrent infections
Protective good bacteria depend on glycogen in the cells that shed from the surface of the vagina as a food source. The levels of good bacteria are also interrelated to the pH of the internal environment. As the vaginal tissue becomes thinner and sheds less cells, and the pH becomes less acidic, the levels of good bacteria can decrease and the risk of infections can rise. - Urinary urgency and incontinence
Feelings of constantly needing to go to the toilet, or slight “leakage” when you cough or sneeze. The cause can be multi-factorial including loss of structural strength in the uro-genital symptoms, changes in blood supply, activation and strength of the pelvic floor muscles and neural (nervous symptoms) factors.
These symptoms, known collectively as vaginal atrophy or the “genito-urinary syndrome of menopause”, can have a negative impact on your general well-being, causing lifestyle alterations and in many cases placing a stress on intimate relationships.
Research has indicated that almost half of all women will suffer from the effects of vaginal atrophy during their lifetime, yet only 25% of these women have previously sought medical advice.
Existing Treatment Options for Vaginal Rejuvenation.
The most common treatment for vaginal atrophy has required an ongoing application of hormone based (oestrogen) creams directly into the vagina. For a variety of reasons, some women are not able to use these creams, become uncomfortable with this process, or are irregular with the application and eventually discontinue use.
Key Benefits of MonaLisa Touch™ Vaginal Rejuvenation Treatment
- Quick treatment, approximately 15 minutes per session
- No anaesthetic required
- Low risk with minimal side effects
- Minimal downtime
- Suitable for almost all women, including patient groups who may be unsuitable for hormone replacement therapy e.g. breast cancer patients
How does MonaLisa Touch™ Vaginal Rejuvenation work?
The MonaLisa Touch procedure uses a fractionated CO2 laser to stimulate the body’s own regenerative processes, creating more hydrated and healthy cells, and improving the circulation and nutrient supply to the vaginal mucosa. This can improve the integrity and elasticity of the vaginal wall, return the internal vaginal environment to more normal levels and can lead to an improvement in symptoms of vulvo-vaginal atrophy.
In as a little as 30 days after treatment, the regeneration of new tissue in the vaginal wall builds a naturally stronger structure and the protective mucosal lining recovers volume, hydration and elasticity.
