IPL Skin & Vascular

Skin rejuvenation with IPL is an easy effective way to achieve youthful, healthy-looking skin.

Using a high-quality medical IPL machine that is suitable for virtually all skin types, we can reduce age spots, pigmentation and visible blood vessels.

IPL – Photorejuvenation & Vascular treatments

As we go through life, particularly for those of us who live in harsh climates, our skin ages due to reduced collagen production and exposure to UV light. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment  of sun-damaged skin can:

  • Make your skin look smoother
  • Reduce or remove age spots
  • Reduce uneven pigmentation
  • Reduce diffuse redness.
  • Improve skin texture

Facial treatments are the most popular, but all body areas can be treated. We can also use this advanced IPL technology to treat vascular lesions such as Port Wine Stains, facial blood vessels (telangiectasia), and the diffuse redness seen in early Rosacea. IPL can also be effective in the treatment of active acne, and is one of the treatments we offer as a multimodal acne management plan.

How does IPL work to rejuvenate skin?

At SkinBox, we are proud to offer the latest generation of IPL technology, known as Selective Waveband Technology (SWT). Short, safe bursts of intense pulsed light are directed at the skin. The Nordlys Ellipse® system filters the light to ensure the wavelengths used are absorbed by haemoglobin in the fine blood vessels and melanin in the age spots. When cells containing a lot of melanin or haemoglobin are treated, the target heats up and is destroyed within a few 1000ths of a second.

The narrower wavelength bands of the SWT, enables us to treat photodamaged skin using less than half the fluence, no need for active cooling, and fewer treatments than reported in studies with broadband IPL devices. Safer, quicker and more comfortable than ever before.

FAQ’s about Photorejuvenation & Vascular treatments

Can I be treated with IPL?

Treatments are most efficient in patients with light skin, who are not suntanned at the time of treatment. If your skin is less tanned, the contrast between the age spots/blood vessels and the background colour of your skin is greater, making treatment easier and more comfortable. However, we use a Nordlys® Ellipse IPL machine, which has fully programmable settings for different skin types, to deliver the correct energy output for your complexion.

How long does an IPL treatment take?

A full-face treatment takes less than 20 minutes. You should see an improvement after the first treatment, but up to 3 treatments may be required to achieve the full effect.

Does the IPL treatment hurt?

While tolerance of pain is very individual, no anaesthetics are needed, although a cooling air stream can be used if required. Most people describe the sensation as practically pain-free, similar to that of an elastic band snapping on to the skin. After the treatment your skin may feel similar to the gentle warmth after a day on the beach.

Do I need to take special precautions before and after IPL treatment?

It is important to avoid tanning (sun, solarium or self-tanning products) before and during the treatment period. Otherwise your tanned skin will absorb more light, which makes the treatment less effective and less comfortable. Generally, no special care is necessary after treatment, but people with sensitive skin may benefit from applying a cold damp cloth to the face immediately after treatment. After treatment it is important that you avoid excessive sun exposure and ensure that the treated skin is protected with sunscreen of SPF30 or higher.

What can I expect after IPL treatment?

You may notice that the skin looks a little “dirty” for a few days following treatment. After that you will find that your skin looks smoother and fresher. You might choose to have 1-2 annual maintenance treatments in order to keep your youthful appearance.

Are there any contradictions?

Contraindications to IPL for photo rejuvenation and vascular treatments:

  • Recent sunburn or unprotected sun exposure
  • Pregnancy
  • Epilepsy or seizures triggered by flashing light
  • Infection, dermatitis, ezcema or cold sores within the treatment area
  • Certain medications.
What are the potential side effects of IPL hair removal?

IPL treatments are generally perceived to be simple beauty treatments, however this is not the case and outcomes vary depending upon the quality of the IPL machine and the experience of the therapist. In addition, serious potential complications can arise if information is withheld at the time of consultation.

At the Skinbox, our knowledgeable and experienced Dermal Therapists use a high quality Nordlys® Ellipse IPL machine. Prior to your first treatment, you will be offered a complimentary consultation, which may involve a patch-test to allow an accurate assessment of your skin’s response, even if you have previously had IPL elsewhere.

Potential complications of IPL treatment include:

  • Prolonged redness and swelling.
  • Darker patches of pigment on the skin (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation), which can last for up to a year.
  • Paler patches on the skin (hypo-pigmentation), which can last for up to a year or be permanent.
  • Blistering of the skin.
